High-Altitude Medical
HANDBOOK
People who wear contact lenses should pay special attention to hygiene – clean hands are essential.
TYPES OF CONTACT LENSES
➤ Daily lenses – the safest option for high-altitude use. Wear them for one day and dispose of them after use.
➤ “Day and night” lenses – can be worn at low altitude for up to a month without removal, but in mountain conditions, limit use to one week, then replace with a new pair.
➤ Monthly lenses removed daily – least recommended for mountain use due to the difficulty of maintaining high hygiene standards.
SAFE STORAGE AND PROTECTION
➤ Protect lenses and lens solution from freezing – the best method is to store them in your sleeping bag overnight.
➤ Fill a small lens case with solution and keep it in an inner pocket, so you always have access to liquid, not ice, when you need to remove your lenses.
SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS
➤ Maintain clean hands before touching lenses.
➤ Prefer daily lenses for high-altitude conditions.
➤ If using “day and night” lenses, do not wear them for more than a week.
➤ Avoid monthly lenses removed daily while in the mountains.
➤ Protect lenses and solution from cold and freezing.
