High-Altitude Medical
HANDBOOK
High UV radiation in the mountains can cause painful sunburns and, in extreme cases, snow blindness.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN AT HIGH ALTITUDE
During high-altitude expeditions, your skin is exposed to much stronger UV radiation than at lower elevations. To prevent sunburn:
➤ Use sunscreen with a high UV filter (at least SPF 30).
➤ Make sure the sunscreen is not water-based – trying to squeeze frozen cream in the morning can be a painful surprise on sunburned skin.
➤ Protect your lips with a UV-blocking lip balm (minimum SPF 30).
➤ When a helmet is not required, wear a wide-brimmed hat to shield your head.
➤ Apply sunscreen carefully to ears, nose, and nostrils.
➤ Use a nose guard when possible, often integrated with glacier glasses.
