High-Altitude Medical
HANDBOOK
People suffering from migraine do not have an increased risk of developing altitude-related illnesses.
PLANNING AND PREPARATION
It is advisable to consult a physician before the expedition to ensure that symptoms are stable and well-controlled.
Headache is a very common symptom at high altitude, especially for those who already experience migraines at sea level.
MIGRAINE AND HIGH ALTITUDE
➤ High altitude can trigger migraines, which may occur more frequently, be more severe, or present differently than at sea level.
➤ Avoid headache triggers: lack of acclimatization, dehydration, physical exhaustion, alcohol.
➤ Headaches should be treated with pain-relief medications according to prior medical guidance.
➤ During the “aura” phase, migraine sufferers may experience symptoms resembling a stroke – rapid observation and, if in doubt, medical consultation are essential.
KEY RECOMMENDATIONS
➤ Migraines do not increase the risk of altitude illness, but symptoms may worsen.
➤ Plan proper acclimatization and maintain hydration and rest.
➤ Monitor symptoms and use pain-relief medications that have proven effective previously.
➤ Be aware of the aura phase and potential neurological signs – consult a physician if any doubts arise.
