High-Altitude Medical
HANDBOOK
Individuals with a history of mental health disorders should consult a psychiatrist before traveling to high mountains. It is also important to take prescribed medications regularly and according to medical recommendations while at altitude.
THE IMPACT OF ALTITUDE ON MENTAL HEALTH
During high-altitude expeditions, there are usually both good and difficult days. Challenging moments may lead to feelings of disappointment, low mood, or even depressive symptoms. For this reason, it is important to be prepared for mood fluctuations during the expedition.
Staying at high altitude can affect both emotional well-being and cognitive functioning.
Factors that may influence mental health during an expedition include:
➤ high-altitude hypoxia,
➤ altitude-related exhaustion,
➤ physical fatigue from exertion,
➤ fluid and electrolyte imbalances,
➤ interpersonal relationships within the team, often involving people from different cultures,
➤ anxiety related to altitude illnesses.
PRE-EXPEDITION MEDICAL CONSULTATION
People with mental health conditions should consult a specialist before planning a high-altitude expedition in order to assess travel safety, review their treatment, and prepare for possible psychological challenges associated with staying at altitude.
