INTERSTITIAL LUNG DISEASES

In people with pleural or interstitial lung diseases, an echocardiographic examination (echocardiography) should be performed before traveling to high altitude in order to assess whether pulmonary hypertension is present.

RISK OF PULMONARY HYPERTENSION

Symptomatic pulmonary hypertension is a contraindication to high-altitude travel.

Individuals with secondary pulmonary hypertension who are planning a high-altitude trip should consider:

➤ using supplemental oxygen while at altitude,

➤ taking nifedipine as prophylaxis against High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE).

With appropriate preparation, the risk of complications in the mountains can be reduced, allowing safer planning of high-altitude activities.

PRE-EXPEDITION MEDICAL CONSULTATION

A medical consultation before the expedition allows proper assessment of risks related to lung disease and pulmonary hypertension, adjustment of the expedition plan, and discussion of HAPE prevention strategies.
