High-Altitude Medical
HANDBOOK
At high altitudes, low humidity, increased physical exertion, and faster breathing increase the risk of dehydration. Additionally, breathing cold, dry air can irritate the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, dry them out, reduce their protective functions, and make them more susceptible to infections.
WHY IT HAPPENS?
The nose is responsible for warming and humidifying the air we breathe. When it is congested – a common occurrence in the mountains – we breathe through our mouth, exposing the throat and larynx to cold, dry air. This significantly increases the risk of upper respiratory tract inflammation.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR AIRWAYS:
➤ Blow your nose regularly; line your glove thumb with a soft material for comfort.
➤ Apply petroleum jelly to dry or cracked skin around the nose.
➤ Use nasal drops if your nose becomes blocked.
➤ Carry lozenges or throat tablets – use them prophylactically to keep your upper airways moist.
- Dry mucous membranes reduce protection against viruses and bacteria, increasing the risk of infection.
➤ Cover your mouth and nose with a headband, buff, scarf, or mask to humidify the inhaled air. Wearing a mask or a dedicated breathing mask provides excellent additional protection.
MAIN SYMPTOM
The primary symptom of high-altitude laryngitis and throat irritation is a persistent, dry cough.
Why it matters
Upper respiratory infections at high altitude can seriously hinder mountain activities and take longer to heal than at sea level. Preventive measures are therefore essential.
