ALLERGIES AND HIGH-ALTITUDE EXPEDITIONS

When planning a trip to high-altitude mountains, people with allergies need to pay special attention to proper medical preparation.

PREPARING YOUR EXPEDITION MEDICAL KIT

Before your trip, equip your expedition medical kit with:

➤ an adrenaline auto-injector,

➤ antihistamines (e.g., Desloratadine),

➤ steroids (e.g., Dexamethasone).

It is also highly recommended to consult a physician before the expedition to discuss your individual risk and develop a plan for managing potential allergic reactions.

MEDICAL IDENTIFICATION AND QUICK ACCESS TO MEDICATIONS

At high altitude, wear a medical ID – such as a bracelet or necklace – that clearly states your allergies. Always keep your pocket adrenaline with you and use it immediately if needed.

ALLERGIC REACTIONS – VIGILANCE AND RAPID RESPONSE

Remember that an allergic reaction you have experienced before may recur without warning, even within 24 hours.

If you or a companion experience an anaphylactic reaction, after administering treatment, seek medical help as quickly as possible.
