High-altitude medicine
ZONE OF KNOWLEDGE
People wearing contact lenses should pay special attention to hygiene – clean hands are essential.
TYPES OF CONTACT LENSES
➤ Daily lenses – the safest form of so-called "second eyes". You wear them for one day and throw them away after use.
➤ "day and night" lenses – can be worn in lowlands for a month without removal, but in mountainous conditions, it is recommended to wear them for a maximum of one week, followed by a switch to a new pair.
➤ Monthly lenses removed daily – least recommended in the mountains, due to difficulties in maintaining high hygiene.
SAFE STORAGE AND PROTECTION
➤ Protect lenses and lens solution from freezing – best stored in a sleeping bag during the night.
➤ Fill a small lens case with solution and carry it in your inner pocket, so you have access to the solution, not ice, when you need to remove the lenses.
SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS
➤ Maintain hand hygiene before touching lenses.
➤ Prefer daily lenses in high-altitude conditions.
➤ If using "day and night" lenses, do not exceed a week of wear.
➤ Avoid monthly lenses removed daily in the mountains.
➤ Protect lenses and solution from cold and freezing.
