High-altitude medicine
ZONE OF KNOWLEDGE
When planning a trip to high mountains, individuals with allergies should pay special attention to proper medical preparation. FIRST AID KIT EQUIPMENT Before your trip, equip your first aid kit with: ➤ an auto-injector with adrenaline, ➤ antihistamines (e.g. Desloratadine), ➤ steroids (e.g. Dexamethasone). It is also advisable to seek a medical consultation before the trip to discuss individual risks and how to respond in case of an allergic reaction. MEDICAL IDENTIFICATION AND QUICK ACCESS TO MEDICATION At altitude, wear a medical identifier – a bracelet or necklace – with information about your allergies. Always carry pocket adrenaline and use it immediately if needed. ALLERGIC REACTIONS – AWARENESS AND QUICK ASSISTANCE Remember that an allergic reaction that occurred previously may reappear without warning, even within 24 hours. If you or one of your companions experiences an anaphylactic reaction, after treatment, try to reach a doctor as quickly as possible. BIBLIOGRAPHY • Travel at High Altitude – www.medex.org.uk • K.
