High-altitude medicine
ZONE OF KNOWLEDGE
Individuals with mental illness should consult a psychiatrist before traveling to high altitudes. It is also important to take medications regularly and as prescribed during stays at high elevations.
THE IMPACT OF ALTITUDE ON MENTAL HEALTH
During high-altitude expeditions, there are better and worse days. Difficult moments can trigger feelings of disappointment, mood swings, and even depressive symptoms. Therefore, it is wise to prepare for mood fluctuations during the trip.
Staying at high altitude can affect both emotional well-being and cognitive functions.
Several factors can influence mental state during the expedition, including:
➤ high-altitude hypoxia (oxygen deprivation),
➤ altitude-related exhaustion,
➤ fatigue from physical exertion,
➤ disturbances in water-electrolyte balance,
➤ interpersonal relationships within the team, often among individuals from different cultures,
➤ anxiety related to altitude sickness.
CONSULTATION BEFORE THE EXPEDITION
Individuals with mental health conditions should consult a specialist before planning a high-altitude expedition to assess travel safety, discuss ongoing treatment, and prepare for potential psychological challenges associated with high-altitude stays.
