LUNG TISSUE DISEASE AND ALTITUDE

For individuals with pleural or lung parenchyma diseases, it is necessary to perform an echocardiogram before heading to high altitudes to assess whether pulmonary hypertension is present.

 

RISK OF PULMONARY HYPERTENSION

 

Symptomatic pulmonary hypertension is a contraindication for traveling to high altitudes. Individuals with secondary pulmonary hypertension planning a trip should consider using:

 

➤ oxygen during their stay at high altitudes,

➤ nifedipine as a preventive measure against High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE).

 

 

 

With proper preparation, the risk of complications in the mountains can be reduced, allowing for safe planning of activities.

 

CONSULTATION BEFORE THE TRIP

 

A medical consultation allows for the assessment of the risk of complications related to lung diseases and hypertension, the adjustment of the expedition plan, and the discussion of HAPE prevention.
